Who Can Become an Expert?
Hire Local is open to everyday Kiwis and professionals who want to offer their services — from tradespeople and freelancers to students or side hustlers. If you have a skill and want to get hired locally or online, you can apply to become an expert.
Basic Requirements
To create an expert account, you must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Live in New Zealand
- Have a specific skill or service you can offer (e.g. cleaning, design, tutoring, building, etc.)
- Be reliable, respectful, and willing to complete jobs professionally
- Accept the platform’s terms and conditions and community guidelines
What Types of Experts Are Welcome?
Hire Local accepts experts in a wide range of categories, including:
- Trades & Services (builders, electricians, plumbers, handymen)
- Home & Garden (cleaners, gardeners, movers)
- IT & Software (developers, tech support, app builders)
- Design & Creative (graphic design, video editing, photography)
- Writing & Translation (copywriters, editors, translators)
- Tutoring & Education (math tutors, music teachers, exam prep)
- Admin & Business Support (virtual assistants, bookkeeping, resume help)
If your skill doesn’t fit perfectly into a category, choose “Other” and describe what you do clearly.
Who Can’t Join as an Expert?
You cannot become an expert if:
- You plan to resell jobs to someone else (no subcontracting)
- You’ve been banned or reported previously
- You want to offer illegal or restricted services
- You don’t intend to communicate or complete jobs on time
Local vs Remote Jobs
- You can work in-person within your area or offer remote services like writing, design, or tech help.
- Make sure to clearly mention your location and whether you can travel when setting up your profile.
