Who Can Become an Expert?

Who Can Become an Expert?

Hire Local is open to everyday Kiwis and professionals who want to offer their services — from tradespeople and freelancers to students or side hustlers. If you have a skill and want to get hired locally or online, you can apply to become an expert.

Basic Requirements

To create an expert account, you must:

    • Be at least 18 years old
    • Live in New Zealand
    • Have a specific skill or service you can offer (e.g. cleaning, design, tutoring, building, etc.)
    • Be reliable, respectful, and willing to complete jobs professionally
    • Accept the platform’s terms and conditions and community guidelines

What Types of Experts Are Welcome?

Hire Local accepts experts in a wide range of categories, including:

    • Trades & Services (builders, electricians, plumbers, handymen)
    • Home & Garden (cleaners, gardeners, movers)
    • IT & Software (developers, tech support, app builders)
    • Design & Creative (graphic design, video editing, photography)
    • Writing & Translation (copywriters, editors, translators)
    • Tutoring & Education (math tutors, music teachers, exam prep)
    • Admin & Business Support (virtual assistants, bookkeeping, resume help)

If your skill doesn’t fit perfectly into a category, choose “Other” and describe what you do clearly.

Who Can’t Join as an Expert?

You cannot become an expert if:

    • You plan to resell jobs to someone else (no subcontracting)
    • You’ve been banned or reported previously
    • You want to offer illegal or restricted services
    • You don’t intend to communicate or complete jobs on time

Local vs Remote Jobs

  • You can work in-person within your area or offer remote services like writing, design, or tech help.
  • Make sure to clearly mention your location and whether you can travel when setting up your profile.
